Getting There and Parking

Skip parking on C-Street itself (zombies and cars don’t mix). Instead, use nearby public lots or take advantage of the free shuttle from Cox North’s east lot. It runs throughout the evening and drops you close to the action.

HOW THRILLER ON C-STREET BEGAN

Like all great traditions, Thriller on C-Street started small and a little unexpectedly.

Back in 2010, Anne and Andy Walls of Dance With Me Studio decided to teach a group of students something a little livelier than ballroom steps: Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The class was such a hit that they opened it up to the community, offering six weeks of lessons for anyone brave enough to join.

Soon, the Savoy Ballroom was packed with would-be zombies. But with more than 100 dancers and just as many spectators, it quickly outgrew the venue. Andy approached the City of Springfield about closing off Commercial Street for a one-night-only outdoor performance.

That night, 120 zombies stumbled into the street to see what would happen, and Springfield fell in love. About 2,000 people showed up for the first Macabre Promenade. By 2016, the event had grown to feature 150 dancers and more than 5,000 spectators.

THE C-STREET ZOMBIES

It’s not just the makeup or the dance moves. It’s the people who make Thriller on C-Street a Springfield tradition worth screaming for.

Even before the beginning of fall, around 200 performers would come together to form the C-Street Zombie Corps − locals aged 10 to 80 who spend weeks rehearsing under the direction of Dance With Me and Savoy Ballroom co-owner Anne Walls. By the time October rolls around, they’ve transformed into a six-block spectacle of zombies in motion.

They come from every corner of the community: teachers, artists, retirees, traveling nurses like Lara Williams, even folks recovering from surgery − all united by the chance to bring a little spooky joy to Springfield. Some are first-timers; others, like Lara, return year after year, each time in a new character (her “haunted nurse” was a crowd favorite).

And yes, even your Realtor is one of them.

That’s right − I’m Laura Duckworth, co-founder of Flat Fee Redefined. By day, I’m helping Springfield families buy and sell homes. But in October, I swap my blazer for zombie makeup and join the Corps in full glam-undead style. Last year, I was dressed as a glittery Chappell Roan zombie.
