Christian County
Christian County is south of Greene County, and between 2000 and 2010 was the fastest growing county in the state and one of the fastest in the nation. This growth is partially due to its ideal location between Springfield and Branson, and also due to the county’s award-winning schools and a focus on education.
Home of the Finley River, the county seat of Ozark is a beautiful place to explore the outdoors and sample local flavors. Foodies have recently been flocking to Ozark due to conservationist and Bass Pro Founder Johnny Morris opening Finley Farms which includes The Ozark Mill Restaurant, The Workshop, and The Garrison Speakeasy. Both Nixa and Ozark offer a variety of local boutiques and restaurants.
Nixa is the largest city in Christian County and, in addition to its award-winning schools, Nixa is known as an innovative city, having won five Missouri Municipal League Innovation Awards. Through a partnership with Suddenlink Communications, it was recognized as southwest Missouri’s first Gigabit City The city recently partnered with Ozark and Christian County to collaborate on creating an economic development organization called Show Me Christian County.
In addition to Finley River Park, the possibility of outdoor activities are endless in Christian County. One local favorite is the Busiek State Forest and Wildlife Area-it has 2700 acres of trails for hikers, wildlife watchers, campers, horseback riders, and bikers. Cave-enthusiasts will want to check out Smallin Civil War Cave, an intricate underground chamber. The National Tiger Sanctuary is a facility caring for big cats, and holds a special place in our hearts (instead of a traditional wedding rehearsal dinner, Anthony and I took our families and bridal party on a customized Tiger Sanctuary Tour). You can also visit the Nixa Community Center (the X Center) on the 40 acre McCauley Park with a golf course, soccer fields, walking fields, gymnasium, and fitness center. Similarly, the Ozark Community Center (The OC) offers various classes and fitness equipment, and is the starting point for the Bluff Spring Trails.
Christian County offers a variety of annual festivals including Nixa’s Sucker Days (named after a fish), Sparta’s Persimmon Days, the Clever Fourth of July celebration, the Billings Fair, Ozark’s High School Rodeo Championships, Village Days, Chadwick’s Railroad Days, Ozark Mountain Rendezvous, County Fair in July, and the Festival of Lights and Friday Night Lights in November and December.
In addition to Nixa and Ozark, other Christian County cities are Clever, Billings, Sparta, Fremont Hills, and Highlandville. While Springfield and Republic are mostly in Greene County, there is a little overlap. Other villages and unincorporated communities are Saddlebrooke, Spokane, Boaz, Bruner, Chadwick, Chestnutridge, Elkhead, Garrison, Keltner, Linden, and Oldfield.
