Greene County is home to Missouri’s third largest city, Springfield, and is the 4th most populous county in Missouri. Springfield, also known as the Queen City, is known for offering all the amenities of a city while also keeping a small town feel. With a cost of living averaging 11% below the national average and two of the best health systems in the nation, it is no wonder so many have chosen to call it “home”. An education-focused-community through and through, Springfield boasts having Missouri’s largest fully accredited school system, Springfield R-12. It was also ranked as the Best College Town in Missouri, with more than 24,000 students attending Missouri State University. That doesn’t include the students of Drury University, Ozarks Technical Community College and Evangel University!

Springfield also is the Birthplace of Route 66, where Actor Brad Pitt was raised, and is home to the original Bass Pro, North America’s Premier Outdoor and Conservation Company, plus Bass Pro’s newer addition-Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium. In addition to diverse and impressive dining and brewery scenes, Springfield boasts a National airport, the Springfield Cardinals, Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, and an extensive network of parks and greenway trails.

Springfield recently passed Forward SGF, a 20-year community-driven strategic plan for driving growth and redevelopment, with such motivating themes as arts, culture and historic preservation, beautifying the community’s physical image and creating quality of place, public safety, health and well-being, and fiscal sustainability and economic vitality. Go to ForwardSGF.com for more information on the over 700 recommendations the plan outlines, but among the projects are:

  • Corridor Improvements: creating more attractive and safe corridors while embracing green space. Immediate projects are the Grant Avenue Parkway connecting Downtown Springfield and Wonders of Wildlife, and the Boonville Corridor connecting Downtown Springfield and historic Commercial Street.
  • Restore SGF: a local initiative encouraging reinvestment and homeownership in our neighborhoods.
  • UnGap the Map: an expansion of the trail network in order to close gaps and take advantage of this unique asset

The county seat is Springfield but other towns and unincorporated communities are Battlefield, Ash Grove, Billings, Bois D’arc, Brookline, Ebenezer, Fair Grove, Rogersville, Strafford, Walnut Grove, Republic, Willard, Avalon Park, Cave Spring, Cody, Elwood, Glidewell, Hackney, Harold, Haseltine, Hickory Barren, Logan, Mentor, Mumford, Oak Grove Heights, Palmetto, Pearl, Phenix, Plano and Turners.

Republic is the second largest city in Greene County, and has a suburban feel while offering tons of activities and opportunities. There you can find over 2.4 miles of trails, the Republic Aquatic Center, and Amazon’s first fulfillment center which opened in 2021.

With Anthony being a former chef, we have to mention our favorite eats in Greene County! We highly recommend these local flavors: Avanzare Italian Dining, Nonna’s Italian Cafe, Haruno Sushi Bar & Grill, Jimm’s Steakhouse and Pub, Tinga Tacos, Springfield Brewing Company, Tacos El Gordo, Cafe Cuzco. For a sweet treat, stop by Supreme Kringle Bakery for their famous danish Kringle or a fritter (my personal favorite), or for something colder try Andy’s Frozen Custard which began right here in the Ozarks! If you’d like something stronger, some of the best brews and our favorite old-fashioned is at Tie & Timber Brew Co in the lovely Rountree neighborhood. Another favorite is Hold Fast Brewing in Downtown Springfield.
