Overview of Christian County, MO

Christian County, Missouri, is a rapidly growing area that offers small-town charm and big-city convenience. Located in southwest Missouri, this county has become a hotspot for those seeking a high quality of life in the heart of the Ozarks.

As part of the Springfield Metropolitan Area, Christian County benefits from its proximity to Missouri's third-largest city while maintaining its own unique identity. The county seat, Ozark, serves as the area's administrative center and is just one of the many charming communities that make up this diverse county.

The county's strategic location between Springfield and the entertainment hub of Branson has been a significant factor in its rapid development. Major highways like Routes 60, 65, 160, 13, 14, and 125 crisscross the county, providing excellent connectivity and easy access to surrounding areas.

What's truly remarkable about Christian County is its explosive growth over the past few decades. From a modest population of 22,402 in 1980, the county has seen an incredible surge, with recent estimates placing the population at around 93,000. This growth spurt, particularly notable between 2000 and 2010, made Christian County the fastest-growing county in Missouri and one of the fastest-growing in the entire nation.

Brief History

Christian County has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the mid-19th century. Initially settled by Native Americans, the area saw a shift when the tribes were moved to Kansas City in 1833. The area then reopened for settlement, attracting families from various states, including Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and several southern states.

Christian County was established on March 8, 1859, becoming 113th of Missouri's 114 counties. The county's name has an interesting origin – it was named after Christian County, Kentucky at the request of Mrs. Neaves, a local landowner. She agreed to join the new county only if it was named after her former home.

The county’s economy has evolved through various industries, including lead mines, dairy farms, cheese factories, and timber companies. Today, it features manufacturing industries that produce a wide variety of materials and products such as plastics, electric motors, and stretch limousines. The county has also been home to notable figures like artists Howard Garrison and Scottie Snider, playwright Lanford Wilson, and humorist Suzann Ledbetter.
